October House Update | Personal

I'm having a hard time believing October is almost over. Don't get me wrong, I am the BIGGEST fan of Fall, but fo'real....Christmas is in two months and I'm already not ready. (When I say "ready" I don't mean buying presents, but rather soaking up the warm, meaningful, Christmas spirit. I like to put my tree up early and light Christmas candles as soon as Halloween ends. I've got a lot of work to do in the next week and a half!)

We've been in the house since July and painted every room, except one. That last bedroom turned into our "paint storage closet" and is now the "everything storage closet." It doesn't really bother me that it's not done. The rest of the house, the part we live in, is complete, and that's what matters.

My front door has been on my list of to-dos since I saw the house. The burgundy wasn't bad, but it didn't give the pop I wanted.

I shared the grey striped wall in the our guest room in the September House Update. I so wish I had a picture of the neon blue walls before we painted. The room is finally guest ready. Technically, it only sleeps one, but I plan on getting a trundle to accommodate any of our couple-friends who want to visit! Until then, an air mattress will be our solution.

The bed came from my Granny and Papa's house. Because it's a twin bed, I was able to use a twin XL comforter. The bedding was on clearance at Target for $8.

Our couch is my new favorite thing! Since we moved in, we've used a black leather love seat in our living room. It was neither the color or style I wanted, but it held us over. The worst part about it, you couldn't stretch out...that means no naps! What good is a couch without being nap-able? We ordered our new couch from Esprit Decor in Chesapeake. It took about 6 weeks to come in and was totally worth the wait.

Hard to tell in this lighting, but it's a light green. My favorite shade of green, to be exact.

Well, that's all for October's house update. I'm hoping to get our kitchen cabinets painted in November, so I'll be able to share that with you. Little by little, our house is transforming. We still have a ways to go, but I'm enjoying the process.

September House Update | Personal

September! We are getting closer and closer to my favorite time of year (FALL!) and I cannot believe we have been in our home for almost two months. In some ways, it feels like we just moved in last week, but I also feel like I've been here forever. This house already feels like home and I could not be happier with our decision to purchase it.

I am finally starting to feel comfortable showing you some before and after shots. Not every room in the house is ready to make a public appearance, but I have some projects that are coming along nicely!

In July, I showed you this transformation...

And now that I've had time to hit up TJ Maxx...

mantle decoration

The mantle took MANY coats of white paint...MANY. That red wasn't going down without a fight! The mirror on the mantle belonged to my aunt, then my mom, then my uncle (who painted it white), and now it's new home is my home. My brother sanded it down and I took it outside with a can of brushed nickle spray paint. I used that same paint to change the look of the screen. I thought the black slate of the fireplace and the black screen made the room look too dark. I still need to do another coat, but wanted to give you the full picture. My end goal is to cover the black slate with glass tile, which will also help to brighten up the space.

Finally, I want to share MY CLOSET! It's not finished, but I just HAD to show off that fancy chandelier. Also, please forgive these iPhone pictures...I never claim to be a photographer! ;)

The before...

We had to paint and put down baseboards

Ta-daa! Not shown is the pink chevron rug I picked up at Target. You can find this chandelier HERE. It also comes in other colors...might have to get another one for my guest room. (Kidding, Cal!) *Side note: I HIGHLY recommend the GE Reveal bulbs.

I decided to stick with greys, light green, and teal throughout the house. Our main paint color (seen in the mantle picture above) was too dark for our master bath, so I made my own. I call it "Sterling Grey"....it's a thing now. I thought you should see the original color of our master bath. Peach. A very strong peach. It took two-ish coats of grey to cover it up. I would like to never paint another bathroom again. Ever.

If you follow Katelyn James at all, you know the striped wall in her foyer. The first time she posted about that wall, I knew I would have one. It's SO CUTE! Stripes are very much in style right now. Because we have some high ceilings and lots of angles in our main living area, I decided to put stripes in our guest room. Can't wait to get that guest bed so I can host some guests!

I took this picture right after finishing this project....at 1:30 am.

Our front porch is quite possibly my favorite part of our house. When we did the initial tour, I knew I wanted the house as soon as I saw the porch. Thanks to our moms and a very special family member, I have this cute sitting area. Can't wait to enjoy some breezy autumn nights on this porch! We are on the lookout for cute wall hangings! :)

In our poking around the attic, we discovered the front porch and garage extension were additions made to the original floor plan. How do we know this? There is a roof under our roof. They laid the new roof directly on top of the old one when they extended the front of the house. I've never seen anything like it. Then again, I don't spend a lot of time sticking my head in attics.

I'm excited to share more and more of our first home as things progress. Our master bedroom is ADORABLE, but I'm waiting to show you until I get some furniture painted. Home projects, while fun, are so time consuming. It's difficult to find the spare time, but thankfully, I have some great help!

Welcome Home! | Personal

If there's anything more exciting than moving into one's first home, I have yet to discover it. Additionally, if there's anything more taxing than moving into one's first home, I'm still waiting on that, too. After several weeks of elbow grease, painting, sweat and (sometimes) tears, we are officially living in our HOME!

After a long battle with the cable company, we have internet. WE HAVE INTERNET! Seriously, the internet is one of those things I didn't understand when I first heard of it, but now, I can't live without it. Our house is in the middle of a cellular dead zone, so we have spent many moments fishing for a signal. However, my absence from blogging and social media was not entirely to blame on our lack of connection. Unpacking, sorting, purging, etc...those things have taken up so much of my time.

We have made lots of progress around here. We took our first swim in the pool just a few days ago. Granted, it was 9:00 at night, but I enjoyed it just the same. We need to have a bit of pool schooling...I know absolutely nothing about them. So far, I've fed it a bit of algae preventative, chlorine tablets, and some cleaning tablets...my skin didn't slough off, so I think it's ok. Ha!

Once I can get all of the boxes removed from our general living space, I'll take some pictures to show the before-and-after. For now, this is my favorite change so far...

The majority of our house was a goldenrod yellow. It wasn't really the direction I wanted to go, so we bought MANY gallons of paint and got to work.

The after! Ah - much better! Our grey is called Secret Passage by Olympic One. I love it!

About two weeks ago, I decided it would be fun to have something really girly in my closet. Now, I had a pretty good closet at our previous residence, but the new one is really something worth mentioning. IT IS HUGE. AND IT'S ALL MINE! I cannot believe it! I ordered a pink chandelier from Amazon...add a pink chevron rug and a cute little stool, my closet is really starting to become by favorite place in the house! Ha!

In case you missed this on Instagram , this is it! Ahahaha it's so cute and I'm gonna love having my own little girly oasis.

So excited to be in our home, with internet, and back to regular blogging. Have a great week!

Growing Up Myers' | Personal

YOU GUYS! I have some news that I've been sitting on for a little while now. It's finally close enough that I can share!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Cal and I got married, we were smack dab in the middle of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. As I've mentioned before, we have been on a budget our entire marriage. Trust me, I am not saying we are perfect...we aren't. I certainly made many stupid financial mistakes before, during, and after college, and again before we got married. But for the most part, we have stayed the course.

So after years of paying off student debt, car debt, credit card debt, and building our savings. WE ARE BUYING A HOUSE! IN JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS!

(tears)

If you don't know, we have lived with Cal's parents for the past 3.5 years. Some of your jaws just dropped to the floor...pick them up. Surprisingly, it has been a fairly easy living arrangement for us. Sometimes, we go days without seeing them....and most of the time, I'm not even sure who is home. We are all ships passing in the night. Do I recommend this for everyone? Nope. If you have an issue with pride, if your territorial, or if you just don't know how to get along with people, living with your in laws might not be the best option for you. Sure, we've all had our challenges (I know Cal's dad will love to have full reign of the pantry again! haha), but looking back, it has been such a blessing to be able to live here at a low cost and save for our future. I will always treasure the time we spent here..... oh the stories I could tell, but won't!!!!! ;)

We still have some final paperwork to go through, but everything looks good from where we stand. Our home is ADORABLE and I can't wait to shower my blog with pictures. For now, you'll just have to enjoy this picture of Cal and I on the day we moved into our first apartment.

Haha!!!
